Yesterday, I posted an article saying I’m going to stop using my smartphone for a while. But how ? Am I going to completely switch off my phone and put it in a case? No. This isn’t how it works. As you know, for some tasks, phone is a necessity. Then, What’s my approach to getting rid of my addiction?
Focusing on important things
We are getting distracted by our phones, because we are not focusing on important things and we are not enjoying the work we actually have to do. In order to get rid of distractions, we have to find happiness in the work we are doing.
How to enjoy studying/working ?
If you know something known as flow, then it makes sense. For people who don’t know about flow, Flow means if we are doing some intense task for a period of time without any distractions , we enter the flow state, we don’t feel the difficulty of focusing anymore. We feel real happiness when we are in flow state. I myself have been in flow state few times. That feeling I got, when I completed my work, was nothing near when compared to the feeling I got when I use my phone.
How to focus on important things?
Don’t do things randomly. Plan everything you have to do before you start your day. This way, you are mentally prepared to do the tasks and you get a sense of happiness when you completed your tasks on time. It’s okay if you miss some tasks because of interruptions. But don’t get depressed. Start doing the upcoming tasks and you will be on track again.
Tools that helped me to plan my day and to fight distractions
If I have to say one tool that helped me a lot, its Google Calender. Because, I never knew that we can plan our day in Google Calender . Its simple to use and makes your day efficient.
If you are the person who feel easily distracted by the feed of websites like YouTube, then using extensions that remove the feed may be useful.
For small chunks of satisfaction, use pomodoro apps and set timer based on your personal needs. I would prefer 50mins rather than 25mins.
If you have time, make new habits
Yes, making new habits like reading, writing on medium, learning some skill etc can reduce your urge to use smartphone. That is the reason why I started writing on medium. When writing these articles, I feel some sort of satisfaction which I didn’t get when I endlessly scroll youtube.
I think this article got bigger than I assumed. But I wrote what I felt. Thanks for reading.
